How to ROCK your next wedding
“What Rock N Roll songs are you playing at weddings these days?” The question needs a bit of clarifying as that is such a broad genre – is this 50s rock, classic rock, current rock, etc.? It turns out the question was supposed to be broad. This got me thinking about which ones are popular and which ones I still use.
However, they are some rock classics that, for the moment, always seem to find their way into my wedding sets. Because they are truly “classics” (in my opinion, this is due to their sing-a-long quality), I really don’t think they need a remix. In fact, remixes can hurt these tracks more than they help. I would never play all these songs in one event (usually I’ll use 1-3 max) but here’s a few that still work well:
You Shook Me All Night Long – ACDC
Back In Black – ACDC
Pour Some Sugar On Me – Def Leppard
We Will Rock You – Queen
I Love Rock N Roll – Joan Jett (yes, I’d qualify this as Rock – has it right in the title)
Sweet Home Alabama – Lynyrd Skynyrd
Living On A Prayer – Bon Jovi (Jersey crowds for sure)
Take Me Home Tonight – Eddie Money
Then there are some classics that when mashed with a current song’s beat or done with a redrum (modern drumbeat) work extremely well because the hooks of the song are so recognizable. Here are a few that I tend to use (again not all done at one wedding – a selection of 2-3 per wedding is usually just the right amount):
Carry On My Wayward Son – Kansas
Sweet Child O Mine – Guns N Roses
Jump – Van Halen
Peace Of Mind – Boston
Mr. Jones – Counting Crows
Edge Of Seventeen – Stevie Nicks
Don’t Stop Me Now - Queen
Where Rock where lives right now with the Millennial generation of brides and grooms (which is the bulk of most of our clients) is the 90s-2000s era. Rock songs from that time period that you’d never play during their heyday absolutely crush at weddings right now. In a lot of cases, the originals suffice just fine (though I have a ton of mashups with the hooks of these tracks). I play on average about 6-7 of these type songs per wedding – whereas maybe 5 years ago, hip-hop classics or pop hits would make up the bulk of my wedding dance song selections. The crazy part is that lyrically these songs are probably the furthest from true wedding content that you’d want but nobody seems to care now. A good song is a good song.
Here’s a sampling of some that work super well for me (the key is when and HOW you mix them in):
Mr. Brightside – The Killers
The Middle – Jimmy Eat World
I Write Sins Not Tragedies – Panic At The Disco
My Own Worst Enemy – Lit
Crazy Bitch – Buckcherry
Stacy’s Mom – Fountains Of Wayne
So that leaves us with today’s alternative rock songs. I have to be honest - this genre has been dormant for the last several years as far as wedding dance floor fillers. There might be 1-2 tracks a year that seem to gain a bit of traction, but they never tend to last long and most are not for primetime dancing.
Here’s a few that may get used at a wedding of mine:
High Hopes – Panic At The Disco (probably will fade out shortly)
Broken - lovelytheband (also will fade out as it falls off the charts)
Handclap – Fitz & The Tantrums
Feel It Still – Portgual. The Man
Heartlines – Broods
Kangaroo Court – Capital Cities
Let It Go – James Bay
Take The World - JOHNNYSWIM
What You Know – Two Door Cinema

General College Event Tips
Take these suggestions into considering when planning a college event:
Colleges and universities have a plethora of events occurring regularly. Choose a date that won't conflict with other clubs, sports or academic events. Avoid choosing a date that nears a holiday or school break, as many students skip out early to go home or on vacation.
Select a facility with ample amount of space to accomodate the estimated number of guests. Research school policies on using school facilites to host events.
Begin promotion a month or more in advance. Post flyers throughout the school, buy ad space in the school paper or on the radio station, send e-mails, etc.
On the day of the event, start setting up early to ensure audio equipment works properly, the doors are unlocked, the food arrives and the room is properly arranged.
School spirit is paramount to many college students. Decorate with school colors, and consider having the mascot attend.
College students want to be entertained, so provide enough age-appropriate activities.

General High School Tips
While it is important to allow teens to make their voices heard when
it comes to party planning, there still exist moments in which the
parents needs to step in and make important decisions. A major concern
for many parents who are planning a teen party is how to entertain the
guests while keeping them safe. Create a guest list in order to ensure
that no strangers crash the party. Avoid flyers, which can be
duplicated and result in a house party being inundated with teenagers,
similar to the image of sardines in a can.
Set rules ahead of time. Make it clear to guests what is allowed in one's home. Don't allow teens to come and go from the party. This will prevent one from being held responsible for anything that might happen while the teen is gone, including drinking.
While trust and communication are imperative in a parent-child relationship, being labeled a "cool" parent is not ideal, or necessary. Don't give in temptation by allowing teens to drink at the party. It is, after all, illegal.
During the party, allow the teens enough privacy to relax and have fun, but check in on them regularly to make sure everything is going well and the teens are behaving. Provide enough party games and activities to keep guests occupied and not bored. Theme parties are well-liked among teens, as are activites such as video games, bowling and sports.
Set up a mini buffet of teen favorites, such as pizza, sandwiches, vegetables with dips, chips, and sodas, juices or water.
Be mindful of curfew laws in the area, and obtain contact information for guests' parents in case of an emergency.

General Graduation Party Tips
Give the graduate a gift that allows for reflection on the last few
years of school before moving on to the next chapter, whether it be
college or a "real" job. Do this by filling a box with hand-written
notes from friends and family verbalizing their favorite memories with
the graduate. A picture slideshow or video message will also do the
trick.
Personalize everything. The graduate may or may not be a standout student, but his or her accomplishments are worth honoring. Display photos of the graduate doing his or her favorite hobbies or activites.
Mix and mingle. Invite both friends and family to join in the celebration since both play a role in a person's life.

A Bouquet of Wishes for Secretaries Day
A Bouquet of Wishes for Secretaries Day
This poem is a nice humorous gift for a school secretary and a fun way to say Happy Secretaries Day, thanks for a great year, happy retirement, etc.
(On poster board glue a seed packet of the flower mentioned by each stanza; embellish with colorful flower graphics or cutouts)
A bouquet of wishes for Secretaries Day
Our caretaker of many from August to May
Before our eyes she begins to bloom
Good…"Morning Glory" we all chime in tune
But something happens as the "Phlox" gather near
She begins to wilt and the smile disappears
Our instincts tell us things are looking slim
As those "Snapdragon" buds begin to dim
We see her "Impatiens" grow by the hour
And we know that something is going sour
What a relief when "Four O’clock" rolls around
And our poor secretary can split these grounds
Its home to her husband we see her flee
To cuddle and snuggle and be his "Sweet Pea"

General School Event Tips
General School Events Tips
Before planning any school event, one must obtain permission from school officials to not only host an event, but also to use school facilities. For late-night event or field trips, one might also need to get parents' permission and ask for volunteers to chaparone.
Color Me Thrilled
Choose colors that complement the theme. Use the color palatte to guide decision-making when it comes to the backdrop for photos, decorations, and invitations. Don't give partygoers a headache by choosing hard-to-find colors or colors that don't blend well together.
Save the Date
Check the school calendar to make sure the event doesn't clash with other major happenings. Then advertise in advance to assure the best turnout.
Money Well-Spent
Be smart about budgetting the money allotted to party planning. Ask for donations from local businesses to save cash for extras that will enhance the party. Fundraise with candy, T-shirt, or food sales.
Keep it PG
Don't upset school officials, teachers, and parent by playing inappropriate music. If a DJ is hired, give him or her clear guidelines on what music to play and what is considered appropriate. All activities should also be tasteful.

General Reunion Tips
TIPS ON PLANNING YOUR REUNION
Planning a reunion is an interesting task. There are two directions you can take when attempting to coordinate an unforgettable event like a reunion. The first direction you can go into is to hire a reunion planning company. These companies are great because they will handle all of the upfront financing for the reunion. This will allow you to solidify your location, entertainment, memory book and décor without any upfront money. The money is recouped through ticket sales to your former classmates. This type of company works great if your class did not establish a purse in your senior year or if you didn’t have any monies remaining from the previous reunion.
If you have money readily available to handle the bookings, then an event coordinator would be your better choice. An event coordinator will have an elaborate team of trained professionals to ensure your reunion will be a success. He/She would charge you a flat fee for the coordination; all other financial responsibilities for elements such as décor, location and memory book would be handled through your class during the planning stages.
