Don't over do the length of the party. 2 hours max!
Hold the party around noon. Kids are the happiest around lunch time. Older kids party around early afternoon.
Weather permitting, have the party outdoors. Fresh air is good, and clean up will be easier.
Don't send invitations to school unless the whole class is coming. Still, it's nice to share ice cream and cake with the class on this special day.
As the kids arrive, direct them to a craft activity or game to break the ice. Keep an index card of the party's activities always in your pocket. Always know where the camera is and give out a few to your helper.
The mothers who stay put them to work as your helpers, I know the wouldn't mind.
